At the risk of looking like some Star Trek cast-off, video glasses are just one of those technologies that have not yet captured the mainstream punters wallet.
Of course, there’s a reason for this, not least because most of them are crap. The concept still outweighs the execution, expecially at the low-end of the market: low-res images, bulky, expensive etc. However, more are arriving at a much faster rate so let’s hope things pick up since watching movies on some tiny postage-stamp LCD is as much fun as squinting into the sun.
The iWear for iPod Video is the latest attempt. They look nice enough and weigh just 4ozs, with removable earphones. They connect directly to the iPod dock connector, which does away with extra cables, and project a 44in screen – as viewed from 9ft away. Makers Icuiti, claim that they only draw the same power as the iPod’s own screen so battery life should stay the same.
However, the claim that there are “twin high-resolution 320x240 (230,000 pixels) LCD Displays” is a bit alarming. Since when did 320x240 pixels become high res? The least you should expect for video glasses is 640x480. Expect to pay around £170. The similar iTheater glasses will set you back £145.
